Large wind turbines typically use liquid cooling, but here’s an application that requires no additional cooling. In Antarctica, a Belgian-funded outpost manned by 20 scientists is being powered by eight 6kW wind turbines instead of diesel generators. Very cool, in more ways than one! In this particular part of eastern Antarctica, the temperature can fall to -60°C and wind gusts can exceed 200 mph (322 km). The outpost’s wind turbines are manufactured by Proven Energy. Matthew Traum writes about these tough wind turbines in the Sustainable Energy blog on Design News. Shown in the photo on the ridgeline are the eight wind turbines, with four in front of the outpost and four behind.
